Signs the HDMI port is the problem
The HDMI connector on a Mini Maxx takes every bit of strain from plugging and unplugging the cable, and it is soldered to a board that flexes when the housing does. It is the single most common failure on these handhelds, and it usually looks like one of these:

You have to hold the cable just right
It connects if you push, twist, or prop the cable a certain way, and drops the second you let go.

No communication with the truck
The handheld powers up fine but never sees the vehicle, even with a known-good cable on a known-good port.

It cuts out partway through
A connection starts, then drops. Intermittent contact is a cracked solder joint far more often than it is a software problem.

The port is loose or sunk into the case
If you can wiggle the port itself, or it has been pushed back inside the housing, it has torn away from the board.

Bent, mashed, or missing pins
Visible damage inside the connector. Usually from a cable that went in crooked or got yanked sideways.

You already replaced the cable
New cable, same behavior. That points straight at the port on the handheld.
A dead port does not mean a dead tuner. People replace an entire handheld over a connector that costs a few dollars. Everything on the board that matters is fine. It is the connector that gave up.
The repair
What we actually do to it
This is board-level work, not a swap of a plug-in part. It is the same job we do on PlayStation and Xbox HDMI ports, and we do a lot of those.

Open it up and confirm the diagnosis
We get the housing apart and look at the board under magnification. Sometimes the port is fine and the damage is somewhere else. We would rather find that out before we start soldering.

Remove the old port with controlled heat
The connector comes off with hot air at a temperature and duration that will not cook the components sitting next to it. This is where a rushed job kills a board.

Clean the pads and repair what tore
Old solder comes off, the footprint gets cleaned. When a port rips out it often takes pads or traces with it, and those get rebuilt before the new part goes on. Skipping this step is why a lot of "repaired" units come back broken.

Install and reinforce the new connector
New port goes on, every pin gets inspected, and the shield tabs are anchored so the next few hundred cable insertions pull against the board and not against the joints.

Test the connection, then reassemble
We verify the port holds a solid connection with the cable seated and wiggled before the housing goes back together. Then it gets packed and shipped back to you.

We are in Kearney, Nebraska, and most of the tuners we see arrive by mail. It is a small package and it ships cheap.

Pack the handheld only
Just the tuner, in a padded envelope or small box. Keep your cables at home unless the cable is damaged too. Put your name, phone number, and a one-line description of the problem in with it.
We repair and ship it back
We call you when it is done and take payment over the phone, then it goes back out to you with tracking.

Common questions
- Will replacing the HDMI port erase my tune or unmarry the tuner from my truck?
- No. This is a hardware repair only. We do not power up into the software, load anything, change anything, or connect the tuner to a vehicle. The board keeps whatever was on it when you shipped it.
- Do you work on the original Mini Maxx, or only the V2?
- Both. The HDMI connector and the way it fails are the same across the original Mini Maxx and the Mini Maxx V2, and the repair is the same. Send us a photo if you are not sure which one you have.
- How do I ship my tuner in?
- Send just the handheld unit, packed in a padded envelope or small box, to Shatter Masters, 1324 2nd Ave Suite B, Kearney, NE 68847. Put your name, phone number, and a short note about the problem in the package. Keep your cables at home unless the cable is also damaged.
- What happens if the tuner cannot be repaired?
- We call you before we do anything else. If the board is too far gone to save, you pay nothing for the repair and we ship the unit back to you.
- Do you do tuning, programming, or unlocking?
- No. We are an electronics repair shop. We fix the physical hardware and nothing else. For anything software related, contact whoever sold you the tuner.
- Can I drop it off instead of shipping it?
- Yes. Our shop is at 1324 2nd Ave Suite B in Kearney, Nebraska, open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Central.
